Due to the unreliable postal system, all Newsletters will be taken along to the bar Night on the second last Tuesday of every month, if possible.  Those that are not collected then will be posted.  If you have email, then please let us have your email address so that you can receive your Newsletter in that form.  If you have access to a Computer, you could look at our Website on www.singleconnection@blueyonder.co.uk to see the Newsletter but we do not advertise the time and contact details.

 

BAR NIGHTS – EVERY TUESDAY in HARRYS BAR, 7B Randolph Place, EH3 7 TH (off Queensferry Street).   8.30pm to 11.30pm. We have exclusive use on Tuesday Nights for members only.   Show your membership card on entry or pay £2 into the Charity Box.  Enjoy a drink, a chat and get your tickets for events.  The management are now also serving Tea/Coffee and Pastries.

FRIDAY 26 FEBRUARY – BUS PASS DAY OUT to STIRLING and the WALLACE MONUMENT.   When we arrive in Stirling we change buses for a short journey to the Wallace Monument.  The Monument stands tall and proud outside the city, overlooking the scene of Scotland’s victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge.  For over 140 years, this world-famous landmark has fascinated visitors with its exhibits and displays, telling the story of Sir William Wallace.  The entrance concession fee is £4.90.  Please book with Beth.

 FRIDAY 26 FEBRUARY – THE BEAUTY QUEEN of LEENANE at the LYCEUM THEATRE, Grindlay Street, EH3 9AX.  The Play is a blend of black comedy, melodrama, horror and bleak tragedy.  It has enjoyed successful runs at London’s West End and Broadway Theatres, New York. The story is set in an Irish village Leanne, Connemara in the early 1990’s.  The play centres on the life of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her forties with her first and possibly final chance at love, and her manipulative mother who sets about to derail it.  .  We have 12 seats in the Grand Circle at £13.50 (normally £26.00).  Please pay Mary.

 SATURDAY 27 FEBRUARY – THE SNOWDROP WALK at THE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS, 20a Inverleith Row, EH3 5LR.  Discover the wonderful specialist snowdrop collection in the Gardens on a walk with the Rangers then the early collection of Camellias.  Meet Norma.

SATURDAY 27 FEBRUARY – ANDY and ALANS SKITTLES BIRTHDAY BASH at the SHEEP HEID INN, 43 The Causeway, Duddingston, EH15 3QA.  This is the oldest skittle alley in the world.  Great fun!  Instruction given on the night, beginners welcome.  30 places only.  £4.  Please pay Marjory (0131 478 4423) to book your place and meet her at 7.15 for 7.30pm start inside the Pub.  Alan will be organising teams and keeping the scores.

 SUNDAY 28 FEBRUARYBALLAGEICH  (EAGLESHAM).   A circular walk of around 7 miles with outstanding views from Ballageich.  Directions: Leaving Eaglesham village take the B784 to top of village, proceed straight on at the mini- roundabout, then almost immediately turn right passing Bonnyton Golf Clubhouse, onto Muirhouse Farm Road.  Park at Gas Pressure Station or parking area to the right just before station.  Meet Donald.  Free Event.

 MONDAY 1 MARCHMEET MARJORY NIGHT at HARRYS BAR, 7b Randolph Place.  The best event for new members.  A night to get to know new members.  Meet Marjory at 7.45pm for 8pm.  Regular members are also invited along to meet new members.  Book with Marjory (0131 478 4423).  Free Entry.

 MONDAY 1 MARCH – 30 – 48 CLUB at HARRYS BAR, 7B Randolph Place EH3 7TH.  8.30pm – 11.30pm.  We have a very mixed age range within the club and have had a lot of interest from the 30-48 age group, who would like to participate at some events with more members of their age.  This has become a permanent feature of the club so please come along and give it your support.  Watch out for future dates. Tuesdays, as always, are for all over the age of 30.

WEDNESDAY 3 MARCH – BEGINNERS CEILIDH CLASS at BRUNTSFIELD PRIMARY SCHOOL, £6/£4 concession.  No partner necessary.  Wear flat, comfortable shoes. A great way to keep fit.   Please book with the Office (0131 478 4423) and meet Adele (the dance teacher) in the hall of the school.  Drink after if interested.

 WEDNESDAY 3 MARCH – GOLF at the BRAIDS DRIVING RANGE, 91 Liberton Drive, EH16 6NS  Beginners welcome.  No professional tuition but learn how to hold a club and practice your aim.  £5.50 includes 50 balls.  Club Hire 50p.  Please pay Ian and meet him at the entrance to the Golf Range.  Drink after.  N.B.  Please note change of date from last month.

 THURSDAY 4 MARCH – SWAN LAKE at the PLAYHOUSE, Greenside Place.  The greatest romantic ballet of all!  It is performed by the Russian State Ballet and Orchestra of Siberia.  This is an immortal love story filled with magic, emotion and beauty.  The exhilarating lake scenes where swans play in perfect formation to Tchaikovsky’s hauntingly beautiful music.  4 mid Stalls seats.  £19.50 (normally £24.50).  Please book with Norma (0131 478 4423) and meet her in the foyer.  

 FRIDAY 5 MARCHTHE ROYAL COLLEGE of SURGEONS MUSEUM, Nicolson Street.  Not a night for the faint hearted.   See the displays of pathological anatomy, including the purse made from the skin of the famous bodysnatcher – Burke.  12 places only.   £8 each.  Please book with and pay Beth and meet her inside 6 Hill Square (i.e. the back entrance to the museum) in the reception area.  Go for a drink after in the Carlton Hotel on the Bridges. 

 SATURDAY 6 MARCHDISCO DANCE with a RAFFLE and a BLACK and WHITE THEME at THE ROYAL BRITISH HOTEL, 20 Princes Street, EH2 2AS.   N.B. Fancy dress is completely optional, but there will be prizes for the best Black and White Outfits.  Tonight we are drawing the raffle for 2 tickets for Dancing Queen at the Festival Theatre.  Tickets: £7.50 in advance, £8.50 for guests and members on the door. It is 1628, and following his adventures in The Redemption of Alexander Seaton, Alexander is finally happily set in his life as a University teacher in Aberdeen.  SUNDAY 14 MARCH – MEET YOUR MAKER at the NATIONAL MUSEUM of SCOTLAND, Chamber Street, EH1 1JF.  Meet new and established faces from the many facets of Scotland’s contemporary crafts scene, from jewellery making to glass blowing to textiles.  SUNDAY 21 MARCHBBC SCOTTISH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA at the USHER HALL, Lothian Road, EH1 2EA.  Internationally renowned for his conducting of Wagner, Donald Runnicles’ interpretation of the overture and ‘Venusberg Music’ from ‘Tannhäuser’ will be a wonderful start to this concert, which also features soprano Christine Brewer performing a selection of songs by Richard Strauss, and finishes with Beethoven’s magnificent ‘Symphony No 7′.  We have 7 seats in the stalls.  £8.20.  Please book with Bill Drink after in the Sheraton.

 TUESDAY 23 MARCH – SATURDAY  27  MARCH, 2010AMSTERDAM.  Departure from Newcastle. 20 places.   £170 to share cabin/ twin room.   We will be travelling on the ‘King of Scandinavia’ and staying onboard the nights of 23rd and 26th. A great choice of entertainment including live music, dance groups, bands and discos. No food is included but there are lots of places to eat. Hotel Transfers: When we arrive in Amsterdam the following morning 08.30hrs we will be picked up by coach and transferred to the Hotel which should take approx 30 mins. On return we will be picked up at our hotel at 15.15hrs and taken to the ship. Hotel: We are staying in a ** Hotel for 2 nights with bed and buffet style breakfast (24th & 25th) which is situated in the Museum District.  THURSDAY 25 MARCH – SENIOR SCREEN at the ODEON, Lothian Road.  Odeon Senior Screen is a season of films for the more mature guests.  Go along and meet friends for a mid-morning screening of some of the best recent films and some classics from over the years.  Enjoy free tea, coffee and biscuits before the screening, then relax and enjoy the film.  £3.50.   Please meet Betty.

 FRIDAY 26 MARCH – EVERY ONE at the LYCEUM, 30B Grindlay Street, EH3 9AX.  Every One is a beautiful and poetic look at how ordinary people deal with extraordinary tragedy.  An everyday family, Joe, Mary, Kevin and Mazz, are at the centre of this tale. They are somehow aware their lives are being witnessed by a theatre full of people. But with nothing to mark them out as particularly unusual they are slightly puzzled by the attention.  We have 12 seats in the Grand Circle at £13.50 (normally £26.00).  Please pay Mary. N.B.  SATURDAY 27 MARCH – DISCO DANCE at the PLEASANCE CABARET BAR, 60 The Pleasance, EH8 9TJ.   Tickets are £7.50 in advance, but £8.50 on the door and for guests.  Buy your ticket at a Bar night or send a cheque to the office.  N.B. Any tickets reserved, but not paid for before the night will be charged at the door rate.  Vouchers or loyalty cards can be used for this dance.  Tickets are available as long as the dance is not sold out.  Host on the night is Marjory.  Dress Code is smart – no T shirts, no trainers and dress jeans only.  Directions:  Go through the arch, past the first entrance doors on the left and then in the next set of doors on the left.  Park in the courtyard.   N.B.  Tickets on sale, tonight only, at £8.50 for 2 for next dance at the Northumberland Hotel on Saturday 10 April.

SUNDAY 28 MARCH ABERNETHY, PERTH WALK.   A pleasant 7 mile walk.  Initially a gradual then fairly arduous uphill walk on farm tracks. Where after it’s a pretty flat walk on Forest tracks then downhill on road and farm tracks.  Directions: Take the M90 to junction 9 then take the A912 exit to Bridge of Earn/Newburgh.  Sharp right at A912 (signs for Newburgh/ Cupar).  At roundabout, take 1st exit onto A913 then turn right toward Main Street.  Meet Marion at the Cree Inn, Main Street in Abernethy. Free Event.     

 SUNDAY 28 MARCH – BRAIDBURN and BLACKFORD HILL WIMPS WALK.   A fairly easy, partly circular walk.  Amazing views of the City from the top of Blackford Hill and the Observatory.  Sturdy shoes recommended.  Dogs on lead welcome.  Meet Norma at the Braidburn Inn, 200 Mayfield Road, EH9 3BE (downhill from King’s Buildings).  Drink/Snack after.

 SUNDAY 28 MARCH – LANARK LOCH REVISITED.  A 7 mile walk round Lanark Loch through woods and round racecourse before travelling down country lanes to New Lanark, finally retuning to Lanark Loch. Meet in the Hotel Tea Room at Lanark Loch Car Park (on A73 towards Hyndford Bridge). Bar meal available. (This walk was abandoned earlier in the year but back by popular demand).  Free Event.

 WEDNESDAY  31 MARCHWOODY PINES at the FOLK CLUB at the PLEASANCE CABARET BAR, 60 The Pleasance, EH8 9TJ.  Certain talented musicians have the ability to transport the listener to a different time. With Woody Pines, you find yourself in the Mississippi Delta when AM radio is king, sippin’ whiskey if you’re fortunate and moonshine if you’re desperate.  “Everything from swing band to old country blues goes into our music, along with life’s influences.”  £7 (normally £8).  Please pay Lynn who will issue tickets on the night.  She will be near the entrance to the Folk Club. THURSDAY 1 APRIL – ELECTRIC TALES and COMEDY at the STORYTELLING CAFÉ, 43 High Street.  An April Fools Day like no other!  Come and be entertained by some of Scotland’s best Comedians and Storytellers as they combine their powers in this electrifying performance.  £6/£4.  Please book with and meet Evelyn.

 FRIDAY 2 APRIL – BUS PASS DAY OUT to GLASGOW and the BURRELL COLLECTION, Pollok Country Park.  The Burrell Collection, comprising some 9,000 works of Art, was gifted to the City of Glasgow in 1944 by Sir William Burrell and his wife.  The general shape of the collection we see today was formed early, with Medieval European Art, Oriental ceramics and Bronzes and European paintings all represented.  Free guided tours are available throughout the day.  Please book with Beth and meet her at St.Andrews Square Bus.  Free admission.

 FRIDAY 2 APRIL RICK’S BAR (55a Frederick St) and FINGERS PIANO BAR, 61a Frederick Street. A great night club, with good music.   Please book with Mayte (and meet her inside Ricks Bar at 8pm before moving on to Finger’s Piano Bar. N.B. Open to the public.  Free Entry.

 SATURDAY 3 APRILPOOL, DARTS and DOMINOES TOURNAMENT at the SHANDON SNOOKER CENTRE, 99 Slateford Road.  Can’t play – don’t worry.  You will be matched with your partner for the night, so this is a good mixer.  24 players.  Prizes for winners.  Exclusive use of the downstairs room, 2 Pool tables upstairs.  £4 for players, £3 for onlookers, including a light buffet.  Please book with and pay Norma to secure your place.  Meet her in the Downstairs Bar – Please use main Bar entrance.

 SUNDAY 4 APRIL – HILLWALK – GIFFORD to HOPES RESERVOIR in the LAMMERMOORS.  An easy 7 mile circular hillwalk on good tracks above and around Hopes Reservoir.  Boots necessary.  Sorry, no dogs.  Meet Terry.  Directions: Take the A1 to Haddington then follow signs to Gifford then on to Longyester and turn right after phone box to Hopes Car Park.  Drink after.  Free Event.

 SUNDAY 4 APRIL – FORTH by LANARK WALK.  A rural walk of around 6 miles with delightful views of the Pentlands & Tinto.  Meet Diana in the Sports Centre Car Park in the village of Forth (6 miles from Lanark on the A706 road to Whitburn). Bar meal available.  Free Event.

  OTHER NEWS:

MARJORYS COMMENTS: Thank you to all who attended the VALENTINES DISCO DANCE on Saturday 13th February which was areal success. The DJ Rab from Chaplin’s provided great music, the atmosphere was fantastic and many people commented on how much they enjoyed it. Roy won Dinner for 2 with a bottle of Wine at the Royal British Hotel and Margaret and Anna won a bottle of wine each. The “Dance Ticket Promotion” was also appreciated, where many members took advantage of 2 tickets for £8.50 for our next dance at The Royal British Hotel on 6th March and until further notice we will be having the same offer for all future dances.

.DANCE TICKETS:  Any reserved tickets not been paid in advance, will be charged at the door rate.  Please remember to bring along your membership card to the dances to show to helpers at the door.

 CONNIES RAFFLE: Liz McKenzie collected £62.  Martin Garvin won and donated £31 to the Haiti Disaster Fund plus £25 extra from members on the night.  Thanks.

 HOSTS: Hosts will carry a Newsletter so that you can recognise them at the events.

 WINTER WALKING: Please bring walking boots, waterproof top, waterproof trousers/overtrousers, hat, gloves and a torch.  You will also need to bring something to eat and drink, as there are usually a couple of stops.  Walkers participate at their own risk.

 WALK LEADERS:  We are currently looking for walk leaders for moderate walks on a Sunday.

 BIRTHDAY BASHES: Any club member who would like to celebrate their birthday with other members and have the event advertised in our newsletter, please get in touch with the Office.  It can be a Meal, Dancing, Bowling, Barbecue, House Party, whatever you fancy!

 TRANSPORT:  We are trying to help with car sharing for members.  If you can offer transport to and from events (particularly walks) or if you require transport, please contact the Office (0131 478 4423).  Remember to offer to share petrol costs as they mount up fast – even in town.

 NEW MEMBERS:  As you may have noticed, new members at the bar nights are wearing red name badges to distinguish them from longer term members.  If you see anyone with a red badge looking as if they could do with some company, we would really appreciate it if some of you old hands would chat to them or include them in your group conversations.  I’m sure that you all remember what it was like when you first joined the Club.  Be sociable!

 MEMBERSHIP: We are an independent club although we do share certain events with clubs in Glasgow.  i.e. Holidays, Dances etc… This means that for admittance to the Bar Nights and all other events you must be a member of the Edinburgh Club and show your membership card.  Visitors will be asked to make a small donation on a Tuesday Night.  

 BUS PASS DAYS OUT FOR OUR MORE SENIOR MEMBERS:  We are currently planning to get together a group of senior members for mid-week day trips using their free bus passes (anyone else can go along but would have to pay the fare).  We thought it would be fun to visit places of interest in Glasgow, Stirling, Dundee, Perth, St Andrews and The Borders, travelling together as a “Single Connection Group” and perhaps arranging lunch, picnics and/or walks.  Please note your interest either with the Office (0131 478 4423) or with Beth

  SATURDAY 19 JUNE – VOLUNTEERS to HELP RUN the MOON WALK:  Keep the walkers on their feet as they raise money for breast cancer.   We need 20 helpers to help serve food in the main tent, where the entertainment is being held.   A fun evening!   6pm until approx. midnight.   Please book with Norma and pick up your registration form which needs to be completed and returned.   Meet Norma the Main Registration Tent at Inverleith Park (Arboretum Place, EH3 5NY).

 DINNER DATE: Dinner Date, a new ITV show, are looking for men and women who enjoy good food, good company and would love to take a chance on a blind date.  In each episode of Dinner Date, one lucky person will be given the chance to find true love over three meals… each made by a different blind date.  If you would like to find out more, please email: kerryp@hattrick.com.

 HOLIDAYS:

 FRIDAY 7 MAY – MONDAY 10 MAYWALKING WEEKEND at DRIMSYNIE LEISURE COMPLEX, LOCHGOILHEAD.   In addition to High and Low walks on the Saturday and the Sunday, the Complex offers an indoor swimming pool, indoor bowling rinks and 9 hole golf course. There is also a Dinner Dance on the Saturday night. Twenty of us enjoyed the complex last April so we are going again.  Accommodation is in Chalets having one Double Bedroom (with en -suite) and one Twin Bedroom. The Double Bed room is treated as a Single Bed. The chalets have cooking facilities but there is a snack bar and  restaurant in the Complex and a restaurant in the nearby village. We have booked 8 Chalets for 24 people, ideally 12 of each but that is a bit unrealistic. The cost will be £70.00 for twin bed and £100 for the double bed for the three nights.  For more info contact Bill.

 MONDAY 10 MAY – MONDAY 17/18 MAYMASPALOMAS, GRAN CANARIA, CANARY ISLANDS.  7 nights “All Inclusive” three star Hotel from Glasgow to Las Palmas, sharing a twin room.  The Hotel is located a few minutes from the renowned Maspalomas beach in the south of the year round sunny island. The spacious rooms with beautiful views are furnished with satellite TV, telephone, safety box for rent, bathroom/WC and balcony or terrace. The hotel consists of 2 swimming pools with a whirlpool and a big sun terrace with sun beds and sunshades. The Hotel also offers a wide range of entertainment. In the restaurant you find a breakfast buffet , a buffet for lunch and dinner with a great variety of cold and warm meals.  FRIDAY 28 MAY – MONDAY 31 MAY – SAILING in the FIRTH OF LORNE.   Active sailing weekends aboard “Aislig Bheag”, a Jeanneau Trinidad 48, are ideal for beginners or those wanting to get away from it all and enjoy wonderful scenery, good company and good food.  Explore Scotland’s Firth of Lorne Shores while learning a range of sailing skills.  Visit islands, secluded anchorages and view wild life in its natural environment while making passage in a luxurious ocean going sailing yacht.  Embark at Oban on Friday and disembark on Monday.  FRIDAY 9 JULY – SUNDAY 11 JULY – THE HAMPTON COURT PALACE FLOWER SHOW 2010, Hampton Court.  In the magnificent setting of Hampton Court Palace, with amazing show gardens, you will find an abundance of ideas on how to grow your own, make the most of your garden and enjoy healthy outdoor living, all in a way that nurtures the environment.   We are now organising a package deal to include train to London, entrance to Hampton Court and 2 nights Bed and Breakfast in a centrally located 3 star Hotel in London.  We will also be booking a show and Dinner.  £95 Sharing.  £20 single supplement.    Perth is a lovely town – great shopping, golfing and walking. Included2 Nights Bed & full Breakfast, 3 course dinner, with a glass of bubbly on Saturday evening, and entertainment afterwards. Friday -“get together in the bar” after optional carvery dinner at special price of £16 available between. Walks on both Saturday and Sunday.  Sat afternoon quiz (£2 each-collection-for “winning team”), All rooms en-suite with TV and tea and coffee.    Arrival on Friday (anytime after 2pm), Checkout on Sunday is 11am but you can store luggage in the hotel until 5pm.
